You don’t have to travel far from the dock to catch a striped bass in the Newburyport area. Striper fishing in Joppa Flats (a long sandbar), just seaward of downtown Newburyport, provides for some fantastic action in very shallow water. There are many other fishing areas which are easily accessed from Newburyport including the Plum Island sound, Salisbury Beach, and other areas adjacent to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Striper fishing season on the Merrimack River begins in May and picks up in June, with larger fishes landed. The action slows down in the shallows during mid-July, but picks up again in the Fall. In the heat of the summer, fishing is more productive during early mornings, or late evening or in deeper water with live or cut bait.
